Summer 2021 — Week Six
The Summer Classic was such a hit last week in the Tuesday Night League, we decided to pause the team challenges on Monday for another mixed ‘melee’ tournament. The weather was fantastic and the teams were top notch. But in the end, Ernesto, Jess, and Ryan took first place in the concours after an impressive evening of play. Aaron and Gabe came close to derailing the dream team in the semis, pulling even at 7-7 late in the round, but came up short when Aaron choked under the pressure and missed three shots in row. In the finals, Team Ernesto faced a determined team in Garrison, Steve, and Phillip but they were able to maintain composure and keep the pressure on, earning a 13-7 victory and a piece of pétanque glory.
Dana and Clayton lost a close game in the qualifying rounds to Team Ernesto sending them into the Consolante bracket. But once there, they sliced through the competition like a serrated knife through a ripened tomato. StJohn and Maria put up a fight in the semis but lost 11-6 on some solid pointing from Clayton and a big carreau from Dana. In the finals, Anna and Steph (the self-proclaimed fun team) couldn’t rattle Team Dana who scored a 13-7 victory and a place in Carreau Club history!
MONDAY WEEK SIX RESULTS
*************
The weather was dreamy and the vibes were jazzy on the courts Tuesday evening for the return of league play. Over on courts 1/2 Carreau-No-Virus took on Team Too in a battle for the second spot in the standings. Things got off to a great start for C-N-V taking two close games in the first round. They split the next two frames, ending the night 4-2 and climbing up the leaderboard to within striking distance of first place. Rafik, Jim, and Hichem all had solid evenings going 2-1 in some tough games. Former rookie of the year Adam got off to a rough start this season but was back to his usual form with an undefeated 3-0 performance. For their part, Team Too continues to live by the saying “there are more important things than winning”. One can’t deny how much fun this team is having out there on the courts. But if you look closely, there is some strong player development from their rookies and intermedios. Underestimate this team at your peril for they could have the last laugh and prove that there is nothing better having tons of fun AND winning!
On the other half of the terrain, league leaders Panchito took on 2 Boules 2 Deep and from the get-go it was clear that they had one too many boules just a little too deep. Panchito’s confidence was on full display as they swept both of the first two rounds and ended up 5-1 for the evening with a whopping point differential of 66-31! Taylor, Ian, Jeff, and Kasia each went undefeated for the night and this team has taken the top 5 spots on the individual leaderboard. It was a rough night for the 2B2D crew with several players out of town for an important challenge. But major props to Hugue, Debra, and Jess H. for holding heads high and delivering a late 11-6 victory to get off the schneid.
The league is past the halfway point and things seem to have settled in the standings. But I wouldn’t get too comfortable just yet. The League Commissioner still has a trick or two up his sleeve and he loves to throw a curveball from time to time…
