Fall 2021 — Week Four

After a rainout last week, our Monday Night pétanque faithful were chomping at the bit for some league competition. The pétanque gods obliged, offering up a truly perfect Fall NYC day in the courtyard. Over on courts 1 & 2, the Bad Boules were looking to improve on their last performance and get themselves out of the dungeon. Standing in their way, the first place Sacré Boule who have been playing some effortless pétanque and holding on to that first place spot.

The first two frames were even splits and all close games, except for a second round smackdown from the dynamic duo of Marco and Dan Grrrrr who dropped an 11-0 V on former ROTY Mike G., sending him down the individual leaderboard. But the holy rollers answered back in the third with a sweep on the back of some solid performances from newcomers and QNSY (c) founders Tara and Jeremy. It was even-steven in the fourth frame as Marco and Dan Grrrr returned to drop another hammer and salvage a 3-5 evening for the pétanque outlaws. Ernesto and Nicolas each went 3-0 for the evening, keeping the anointed ones on top and securing their own spots on the individual leaderboard.

On the other side of the courts, the Boule$hit Artists were riding high after a perfect 8-0 performance and hoping to keep ascending the leaderboard on their way to the championship match. But the Tenacious Boule Destroyers have been, well…tenacious and were just a tick behind in the standings and looking to, well…destroy the competition.

This was an even matchup throughout the evening with both teams splitting each round and a differential of one measly point, leaving both teams exactly where they started: in second and third place, separated by a solitary game. The grifters played as a team with everyone contributing at least one victory to the evening. Aaron won both of his games, securing third spot on the individual leaderboard and inching closer to his dream of one day getting a trophy of his very own! For the procrastinators, Tim went 2-0 for the evening and earned spots on the leaderboard, as did Chris who is undefeated for the season and holds the top individual spot. He is currently 12-4 lifetime in league play so if you see him on the courts run the other way!

The standings were evenly split as the Tuesday faithful arrived for this pivotal week four of the Fall Pétanque League. On the north side of the courts, the first place Dream Team sought to solidify their position and get some distance from the rest of the pack. Their opponents: the Spaceboules, a scrappy team with all of the skills to rule the galaxy but who haven’t been able to kick it into warp drive thus far.

It was a clean sweep by the dreamers in the first frame but the space cadets held their own in the following frames on the strength of a 2-0 performance from last season’s ROTY Ian. But after another sweep in the fourth, the Dream Team reigned supreme, going 6-2 for the evening and widening their lead over the other league hopefuls. Mark had another evening of undefeated play, landing him on the top of the individual leaderboard with professional record of 7-1 and +3.38 points per game. Kasia and Derek likewise put in solid 2-0 performances to claim spots on the leaderboard. But the star of the show this week was Maria who meant business, going 3-0 in some top-level games!

On the south side, Great Boules of Fire came into the evening in second place despite having the highest point per game tally by a solid margin. Just two games behind them, the Raging Boules were ready to toss some steaks in the face of the fire and move up the in the standings to contend for a spot in the championships.

An epic battle ensued with each team going punch for punch in four grueling rounds. When the dust had settled, rage and greatness proved equal in the eyes of the pétanque gods. The teams had split all four rounds, each going 4-4 for the evening with the ragers winning the point battle by hair at 55-54. Brendan held it down for GBAF with a 2-0 performance, landing him in solid position on the leaderboard. And, Ernesto likewise dominated at 2-0 while Anne and Jess played supporting roles with 2-1 evenings. in the end, the great ones kept the fire alive, maintaining their second place standing with a two game lead over the ragers who will need to float like butterflies next week or end up on the consolante canvas…
