Spring 2022 — Championship

As our old friend Howie Rose would say, “Put it in the books!” Another amazing league season at the Carreau Club filled with expert points, dastardly shots, great friends and abundant laughter. In the first edition of the competitive league on Monday nights, it was a three way race all season. L’Equipe 51 led the way for the better part of the stretch and despite a few obstacles along the way, they were able to secure their spot on the trophy against veteran hopefuls Le Freak. Meanwhile, The Slaughterhouse dropped into the consolante on the last night of regular season play but were no match for an ascendant Underdoggystyle team eager to take their revenge for the season’s beatings.

A similar story unfolded on Tuesday night where league veterans Dog on a Horse came out of the gate galloping and didn’t give an inch all season. In the finals they faced a scrappy Pétanqurious who came up a touch short in their quest for a last minute upset. The crew from LL Boules J who decided to forego the last round of night one play due to chilly weather found themselves fatefully stuck in third place by half a game. They brought a ton of heart to the postseason but the team chemistry of Nevermind the Boule-Locks was just too much to overcome and the consolante turned into their own personal holiday in the sun…

As the awards ceremony wrapped up, our members took to the courts for the second inter-league challenge. The two nights have built up a grudge match the past couple of seasons and the all-time standings had them tied going into this evening. After a solid win last season, our Monday night regulars have been walking around with a chip on their shoulder but our Tuesday night veterans were unfazed, scoring a convincing win in a classic team challenge of doubles and triples. Final score: 39-25 for the casual, non-competitive, Tuesday folks….

This was without a doubt the most exciting season of league play we’ve ever had at the Carreau Club! So many new friends and old pals, fun times and glorious competition. We feel so blessed to be part of such an amazing community of wonderful people. Thank you so much for being part of this! There is so much good stuff coming down the pipe with Governor’s Island and the opening of our indoor space. We can’t wait to see everyone on the courts again soon!
